(Part 2) I honestly don’t understand why there is so much new hate appearing because of this scene. Maybe I misinterpreted it, but I took it as she at least tried to love Jon, and understood that none of it was his fault. Also, the thought that this one action by Cat is the direct cause of all her family’s suffering is ridiculous. Anyway, just my two cents on the scene. On top of that I thought Michelle’s acting and the writing were brilliant.

Hey, thanks for the message :) sorry i took so long to respond, i’ve been out all day. But it’s been good, I’ve had all day to articulate in my head exactly why I dislike the scene.

(NB: may I just start by stating the obvious - that my evident admiration for Michelle Fairley means that any issue I have with show!Cat has absolutely nothing to do with her portrayal of the character. She has been, is, and always will be an amazing actor, and executed the monologue flawlessly.)

okay so yep.  I think the writers are definitely trying to gain more sympathy from the audience for her. and you are probably right, many viewers probably won’t agree with her self-deprecating conclusions that she is the sole cause of her family’s sufferings. You can take whatever you like from the scene,you can like it or dislike it, I’m not going to argue that everyone must have the same perspective. Maybe the scene is really all about her faith, and not guilt about Jon. Idk. 

But. The thing is. That’s how I took it. That it was all about Jon and the idea that she owed him something. And I categorically refuse to believe book!Cat (or even watered-down show!Cat) would’ve felt that it was her duty to love Jon as a son. Remember, as a Tully, she would’ve been all over the meaning of family, duty, and honour, and what they all meant for her.  I am willing to accept that she may well have prayed initially that he would somehow disappear from her life, and she may’ve regretted that afterwards if he were ill.  But she would never have promised the gods she would mother Jon, as a son, as a Stark.  I rarely make statements like that with 100% confidence, but I am now.  Because if she’d done that, she’d be giving away her own children’s inheritance, therefore not staying true to her devotion to Family.  And I therefore think this is a pretty fundamental change they’ve made to her character.

There are probably 101 posts in the tag right now written far more eloquently than this. But there you go, my opinion, so rarely bestowed on tumblr ;)
